In this article, I'll share a safe and reliable way to purchase the Touch 'n Go card in Malaysia.
Touch 'n Go (TnG) is a widely used prepaid transportation card in Malaysia. It’s similar to Japan's Suica or PASMO, but it can be used not only for public transport payments but also at convenience stores, parking lots, and tolls. If you're planning a long stay or expect to be on the move frequently, getting a Touch 'n Go card in advance will be extremely convenient.
⚫︎ Uses
Paying tolls on highways
Using LRT and MRT
Riding Rapid KL buses (cash not accepted)
Paying for parking (e.g., at shopping malls)
Making payments at restaurants and supermarkets via the TnG eWallet app
The standard card and the new NFC card require an initial fee of RM10 (approximately ¥330).
【 RM = ¥33 as of September 2024; Please note that prices are subject to change..】
The validity period is 10 years for the standard card and 7 years for the NFC card. Previously, you could purchase them at drugstores, but sales have been halted. (They can still occasionally be found at stations, but these may not be NFC-compatible.)
While they are also available on Shopee and Lazada, there have been cases of scams, so let me tell you where to get one safely and reliably!
The best place is the Touch 'n Go store located inside Nu Sentral, right next to KL Sentral station!
Since it’s directly connected to KL Sentral, which many people visit for sightseeing and souvenir shopping, you should be able to find it easily.
👆Enter through this escalator and head to Level 2 of Nu Sentral.
👆Here are the exterior and interior views of the store.
Here, you can purchase the Touch 'n Go card safely and reliably!
1️⃣ First, take a number ticket from the machine on the bottom right.
👇 Press (1) Purchase of Card.
2️⃣ When your number is displayed on the monitor in the store, go to the counter with that number, inform them that you want to purchase a card, and pay the card fee. That's all you need to do!
🔹Charging Method with the Machine
In Japan, the term "charge" is commonly used, but in Malaysia, people use "top-up" or "reload."
First, insert the card and touch the area shown in the right photo. Once you insert the money, you can proceed to top up.
The new card (NFC-enabled) can be topped up anytime, anywhere using the TNG eWallet app!
⚫︎About the eWallet App
- Registration is available for both Japanese and foreign users, but a Malaysian or Singaporean phone number is required.
- You can check your balance and view/download your transaction history.
- You can easily purchase a top-up (reload) PIN code at convenience stores. Just enter the PIN code after purchase to complete the top-up immediately.
Important Points About the Touch 'n Go Card in Malaysia
- If the card is not used for one year, it will become inactive and cannot be used.
- Only credit cards issued in Malaysia or Singapore can be used for top-ups.
That was an overview of the convenient Touch 'n Go card. However, please note that once you top up, the money cannot be refunded, and acquiring a card requires some effort and cost. If you plan to use it long-term, definitely consider getting one!
See you next time〜 😄
