A Book Lover’s Dream! A Massive 24-Hour Bookstore “The Library by BookXcess” Opens

Great news for book lovers!BookXcess, well known as a discount bookstore specializing in English-language books, has opened a 24-hour bookstore called “The Library by BookXcess” at Sunway Square Mall in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. It is one of the largest bookstores of its kind in Southeast Asia.

At the midnight opening event held late at night on December 10, 2025, around 2,000 people turned up, creating an atmosphere that hardly felt like the middle of the night.

The store spans two floors and covers an area of 3,530 square meters. Tall bookshelves line the space, and the total length of the walkways reaches nearly one kilometer. With its maze-like layout, it’s exciting just to wander around.

There are quiet areas for studying, desks for working, and cozy corners where visitors can relax with a book. Rather than feeling like a typical bookstore, it feels more like a comfortable place to spend time surrounded by books.

BookXcess co-founder Andrew Yap shared that more people are feeling overwhelmed by digital life and are returning to printed books. Even after midnight, the store was packed, clearly showing the demand for a 24-hour bookstore.

Co-founder Jacqueline Ng also mentioned that although there are many universities nearby, there are not enough comfortable spaces for students to study. She hopes this bookstore will become a welcoming place for them.

The Library is more than just rows of books.Instagram-worthy features include “Flying Books” that appear to float from the ceiling, and Whale Fall, a ceiling installation by Malaysian artist CO2 made from repurposed damaged books.

The store is divided into four main areas: fiction, non-fiction, children’s books, and non-book items. There are also cone-shaped installations inspired by Sunway’s history as a former tin-mining town, as well as pumpkin displays reminiscent of Yayoi Kusama’s style, making it an enjoyable space for art lovers too.

With tenants such as Kenny Hills Bakers, a stationery shop, a fashion studio, and a smoothie shop, it’s easy to imagine dropping by for a quick visit and ending up staying for hours.

From students and working adults to families, everyone can enjoy the space in their own way. More than just a place to read, The Library by BookXcess offers a new kind of bookstore—one designed for spending time—and is sure to become a beloved spot for many.
