US data centre giant Equinix has announced plans to build a new data centre, “KL2,” in Cyberjaya, Malaysia. The project involves an investment of more than US$190 million and will become the company’s fourth facility in Malaysia.
KL2 is planned to be built near the existing “KL1” facility, within a distance of approximately 1 kilometre.
Responding to Growing Demand for AI and Cloud Services
The development is driven by rapidly growing demand across the ASEAN region for AI (artificial intelligence), cloud services, and enterprise digital infrastructure.
Once fully operational, KL2 will be capable of accommodating more than 2,200 cabinets, allowing it to support a wide range of needs, from small-scale usage to large-scale deployments.
The facility is also expected to incorporate liquid cooling technology in certain areas. This system is designed to efficiently cool the high-performance servers required for AI and large-scale data processing.
Connecting Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Singapore
KL2 will be connected to the company’s network platform known as Equinix Fabric.
This will enable businesses to access AI and cloud systems with low latency across Kuala Lumpur, Johor, and Singapore.
A key advantage is that data can be processed closer to where it is used, making AI applications and high-speed processing more efficient.
Supporting Malaysia’s AI and Digital Policy Initiatives
Equinix Malaysia Managing Director Teh Tat Ying commented:
“By providing AI-ready infrastructure in Kuala Lumpur and Johor, we are supporting Malaysia’s AI development initiatives.”
He also stated that:
“KL2 will contribute to the creation of high-value jobs and support long-term economic growth.”
The Malaysian government is currently promoting the country’s development as a regional digital and AI hub through initiatives such as the “MyDIGITAL” programme and the establishment of a National AI Office.
Expanding Presence in Johor as Well
KL2 is part of Equinix’s broader Malaysia strategy, alongside its existing facilities in Kuala Lumpur, as well as “JH1” in Johor and the planned “JH2” facility.
The company has also secured additional land near KL2, indicating the possibility of further expansion in the future.
