Books Kinokuniya Set to Open New Store at Pavilion Damansara Heights

Great news for book lovers in Kuala Lumpur!

The Japanese bookstore chain, Books Kinokuniya, has announced that it will open its second Malaysian outlet at Pavilion Damansara Heights.

Affectionately known as “Kino” among locals, the store is already well-known for its flagship location at Suria KLCC. Now, it’s expanding to a new, more accessible location within Kuala Lumpur city.

Why a second store now?

The Managing Director of Kinokuniya Malaysia cited the growing reading culture in the Klang Valley region as a key reason for the expansion.

“With the increase in the number of readers, we feel the need to get closer to both our loyal customers and new readers. Our aim is to build a bookstore that serves the needs of the community,” he said.

Accessibility was also a major factor. The new store is directly connected to the Pusat Bandar Damansara MRT station via a pedestrian bridge, making it very convenient to reach by public transport.

Store Details and Opening Timeline

The new store will be located on the 4th floor of the new wing at Pavilion Damansara Heights, occupying two adjoining units and expected to be a medium-sized outlet. Renovation works are already underway and are scheduled to be completed by July 31.

While the exact opening date or month has yet to be announced, Kinokuniya posted on its official Instagram on July 4, 2025, that the new outlet is “opening soon” — a sign that the launch is just around the corner.

Small in Size, Big on Content

Although the new store will be smaller compared to the KLCC flagship (which spans about 34,300 square feet), it is expected to offer much more than just books. Plans include hosting events, author meet-and-greets, and offering exclusive merchandise — creating a space for experiences beyond just shopping.

The store will also feature quality stationery and unique Japanese collector’s items, making it a destination not just for book lovers, but for anyone looking for something special.

A Brief History of Kinokuniya Malaysia

  • 1990: Kinokuniya opened its first Malaysian store inside Isetan Department Store.

  • April 1, 2001: The flagship store opened at Suria KLCC, featuring two floors and an in-store café.

  • 2023: A stationery and gift store (without books) was launched inside Seibu at TRX Mall.

  • July 2025: The second bookstore location was announced at Pavilion Damansara Heights.

In 2026, the Suria KLCC flagship store will celebrate its 25th anniversary.
