🚆MRT3 Circle Line Project Begins – Encircling Kuala Lumpur

Circle Line Alignment MRT3

This map is based on the proposed alignment of the MRT3 Circle Line. Please note that the plan is subject to change.

In July 2025, a major development took place in Kuala Lumpur’s public transportation network. The MRT3 Circle Line received formal approval for its Final Railway Scheme from Transport Minister Anthony Loke, paving the way for the start of the land acquisition process. The acquisition is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.

According to Mass Rapid Transit Corporation (MRT Corp), the agency behind the project, the approval followed a Public Inspection exercise conducted from September to December 2024. During this period, over 45,000 written feedback submissions were received, with an overwhelming 93.3% expressing support for the project.

🌐 What is the MRT3 Circle Line?

The MRT3 Circle Line is a 51-kilometre orbital railway line that loops around the outer areas of Kuala Lumpur. It will be fully integrated with the existing MRT, LRT, KTM, and Monorail networks through 10 strategically located interchange and connecting stations, significantly improving urban mobility.

In addition, the line will provide crucial connectivity to underserved areas that are not well covered by the current public transport system, contributing to more balanced urban development.

🧩 Design Principles: Aiming for Sustainable and Multi-Dimensional Urban Development

The MRT3 project is guided by eight key design principles, grouped under four core themes. These principles form a comprehensive blueprint that looks toward the future of urban development.

1. Alignment That Delivers Optimal Benefit

  • Serving underserved areas in line with the Kuala Lumpur Structure Plan 2040 (PTKL 2040)

  • Driving urban rejuvenation along the alignment

  • Establishing a new multi-modal transit hub in the northern part of KL City Centre

  • Improving access to central Ampang Jaya

2. High Value-Added Economy

  • Enhancing and exporting local technologies and innovations

  • Developing a globally competitive Malaysian workforce

3. Costing and Funding

  • Utilizing private sector funding and non-governmental financial sources for flexible financing

4. Long-Lasting Residual Value

  • Promoting regional economic growth

  • Nurturing regional champions with international potential

📉 Minimising Impact on Local Communities

Based on public feedback, MRT Corp has made improvements to the placement of stations, viaducts, and the overall design of the railway system. As a result, the number of land lots required for acquisition has been reduced from 1,012 to 690, significantly minimising the impact on affected communities. Moving forward, MRT Corp will engage with residents in the impacted areas to explain the updates and provide progress briefings.

🚀 A Circle Line Connecting to the Future

The MRT3 Circle Line is not just about improving transportation convenience — it is a national project aimed at generating wider impacts in areas such as urban development, economic growth, and talent development. As the project progresses, Kuala Lumpur is expected to evolve into a more diverse and sustainable city.
