On September 9, Malaysia’s state news agency Bernama reported that Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim confirmed that U.S. President Donald Trump will visit Malaysia next month to attend the 47th ASEAN Summit. Trump reportedly called directly to convey his intention to participate.
Chinese Premier Li Qiang is also scheduled to attend the summit, and Russian President Vladimir Putin is “seriously considering” a visit, the Prime Minister added. Anwar emphasized that these high-level visits highlight Malaysia’s growing geopolitical importance and that domestic political stability and clear economic policies help bolster investor confidence.
Meanwhile, the Chinese-language media outlet Nanyang Siang Pau noted that, against the backdrop of U.S.-China tensions, the ASEAN Summit could become a “stage for major power rivalry.” Experts pointed out that the attendance of the U.S. and Chinese leaders alone underscores ASEAN’s strategic importance and highlights Malaysia’s role as host. They added that if Putin also participates, the summit would become a “super stage” where global geopolitics and economics intersect.
Analysts also warned that Trump might use his visit to justify U.S. semiconductor tariff policies. If these clash with ASEAN’s commitment to free trade, it could spark diplomatic friction, requiring Malaysia to exercise careful balancing diplomacy.
