Royal Belum Rainforest Resort – Trek through Malaysia’s 130-million-year-old rainforest and embrace the wonders of nature.

Hello! I’m Aya, a Japanese wife.
Following up on our previous introduction to Belum Rainforest Resort, this time I’ll be sharing recommended sightseeing spots in Royal Belum!

Day 1
~ BELUM Discovery Center ~
The BELUM Discovery Center, located just a 2–3 minute drive from the hotel, is a museum-like facility. It closes early, so be sure to check the visiting hours and arrange transportation when making your hotel reservation.

The entrance looks like a botanical artwork! It blends beautifully with the surrounding forest, creating a wonderful atmosphere. Inside the center, you can learn about Royal Belum, see photos from before its development, construction photos, and exhibits of the forest’s wildlife. They even keep fish on display. It gives a great overview of the background of Belum Rainforest Resort.

The center also displays fascinating items like taxidermy of real forest animals, insect specimens, and trees used in traditional medicine. Any young insect enthusiast would surely be thrilled! And the best part—it’s free to enter! Since it’s a forest research facility, there are also books with years of research data available. (Explanations are in English.)

This is the skull of an elephant. It’s amazing to see it up so close!
BELUM Discovery Center
Admission: Free
Be sure to check with the hotel for current opening hours and any closure days.
~ Observation Tower ~
This facility was once used as a British observation tower. There are five towers in this area. It was reportedly used to monitor workers during the construction of Belum. In the past, it also served to keep an eye on groups that often hid in the forest while opposing the government.

The hotel staff guided us through the facility. Be sure to check at the hotel reception if you want to visit this site.

Since it’s an observation tower, it only has a few small windows, and the walls are made of concrete. You can really feel how tough conditions must have been back then. Without electricity, it must have been pitch dark both day and night.

Fee: RM 20
Be sure to check with the hotel for current opening hours and any closure days.
~ STINGLESS BEE FARM ~
A visit to the STINGLESS BEE FARM located within the hotel grounds.

These bees are stingless, so it’s safe to get close to their hives! They won’t sting, and there’s no unpleasant smell.

If you look closely, you can see honey inside the holes. This honey is used in products like cosmetics and is sold at the hotel.
~ Night Trekking ~
Armed with flashlights, we set off into the hills next to the hotel for a night trek! (Cancelled in case of rain)

Meet at the hotel lobby at 8 PM. A guide will accompany you from the hotel. Flashlights and bottled water are provided.
You’ll explore together with the group gathered that day—a great chance to make friends with other travelers and locals!
Things to bring: insect repellent (apply some before heading out as well), a camera, an umbrella just in case, and lightweight hiking shoes. All set? Let’s go!

Scorpions—do not touch them! The guide will explain more, but only in English and Malay.

Spiders that look like they might be venomous, and various other insects—you’ll encounter them all! The night trek lasts about 1 to 1.5 hours. While night safaris are common, night trekking like this is a rare experience! At one point, the guide asked us to do something together to really feel the forest—everyone turned off their lights and experienced it. It was fascinating! You’ll have to try it yourself.
The main activity is the trekking on Day 2, so take it easy on Day 1 since traveling can be tiring.
If you don’t have enough time on the first day, it’s okay not to visit all the facilities mentioned in the blog. You can also see them on Day 3 before leaving.
Aya’s Useful Tips
On Day 2, we went trekking in a remote forest currently being considered for UNESCO World Heritage status! We visited an Orang Asli village (indigenous village), enjoyed a waterfall in the forest, and went in search of Rafflesia flowers—what an exciting experience!
